HOLDEN – Dr. Ellen Ann Howard, D.C., 60, passed away June 14, 2010, at her home. She was born Sept. 5, 1949, in Bangor, the daughter of Paul A. Howard and Evelyn Lyn Katherine (Kimball) Howard. Ellen graduated from Hampden Academy in 1967, the University of Maine, Orono, in 1973, and Logan Chiropractic College. Ellen was an avid skier and golfer from childhood, and called Sugarloaf Mountain her second home for nearly 40 years. She also maintained her parents’ condo in Englewood, Fla. Dr. Howard held a profound passion for her profession, and believed steadfastly in chiropractic care, acupuncture and the ancient arts of healing. She helped to further those fields in Maine from the early 1980s, and remained loyal, helpful and giving to her alma maters and Maine Chiropractic Association throughout her career. Her interests included a love of animals, writing and baking cakes. All her life she was generously committed to giving to others. “As my spirit ebbs and flows, around and about, know that my heart stays filled with love; so much love for the blessed who remain on Earth to teach, not to judge, but to forever honor others.” Ellen was predeceased by her mother, Evelyn Lyn Katherine (Kimball) Howard, in 1958; her brother, James Dig Raymond Degestrom, in 1993; her stepmother, Evelyn Degestrom (Beane) Howard, in 1997; and her father, Paul Arthur Howard, in 2006. She is survived by her loving, devoted daughter and best friend, Kerri Lyn Butler of Holden; and Kerri’s and Ellen’s special friend, Tyler Walker of Holden; brothers, Paul Skip R. Howard and his wife, Theresa Hainer, of Glenburn, and Arthur E. Howard and his wife, Courtney (Hansen) Howard, of Sarasota, Fla.; sister, Kathryn J. Degestrom and her husband, Michael Hamilton, of Centerville, Mass.; aunt and uncle, Connie (Howard) Kendrick and her husband, Al Kendrick, of Bangor; nieces, Heidi (Howard) Wyman and husband, Jeff Wyman, of Exeter, N.H., Kirsten Howard and husband, Orin Wilcox, of Springfield, Va., and Heather Lee McGlauflin of Bangor; nephews, Paul A. Howard II and his wife, Kimberly (Steimel) Howard, of Vienna, Va., Andrew Howard and his wife, Sara (Hardiman) Howard, of Kittery; great-nephews and great-nieces, Wesley Dana Wyman of Exeter, N.H., and Sela Rose Howard and Knox Paul Howard of Kittery, Ella Marie Humbert and Evelyn Cecelia Humbert of Bangor; cousin, Leslie (Kendrick) Tuell and her husband, Peter, and their children, Jacob “Zeb” and Lucas James of Glenburn; and a special friend, Joyce Greeley McDevitt of Winterport. She will be missed and fondly remembered by Penny Sabine, Terry (Dexter) Gormely and her family; Everett Bud Poll and his wife, Laura, and their family; Sue and George Ash; Norma Wieman; Harry Green; Dr. Marjorie Baum and family; Dr. Rick Bruns; Marlene and Marty Glidden; John Royce; George and Cassy Shaw; the Rev. Bob Carlson; Rhonda Whittaker; George Skip Butler; her patients at Howard Health Care; and her colleagues at Maine Chiropractic Association. Ellen’s family thanks Dr. Leigh Jack Forbush, St. Joseph Hospital, New Hope Hospice and New England Home Health Care for their compassionate care and support during Ellen’s illness. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at East Orrington Congregational Church, 38 Johnson Mill Road, Orrington, with the Revs. Bob Carlson and Carl Schreiber officiating, with a public reception afterward. A private family ceremony and burial will be held later that day in the family’s graveside at Locust Grove Cemetery, Hampden. Dr. George E. Roy Jr.

Dr. George E. Roy Jr., passed away May 27, 2009 of unexpected heart complications. Dr. Roy was born on June 21, 1946, in Eagle Lake, the son of George and Evelyn Crook Roy. Dr. Roy was educated in the Fort Kent school system where he graduated from Fork Kent Community High School. He went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps from 1965 until 1967 where he was wounded in battle during the Vietnam War. Dr. Roy received his B.S. degree from the University of Maine in Fork Kent. He attended Palmer College of Chiropractic and received his Doctorate of Chiropractic degree in June of 1977. After going on to establish a highly successful practice in Scarborough, Dr. Roy continued to devote much of his time to serving the community. He was pre deceased by his parents; his brother James and his brother Robert. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Linda Voisine Roy; and five children, Sherry Blake of Scarborough, Nichole Clark of North Carolina, Michelle Claussen of Waterboro, Suzette Roy of Greenwood, and Joshua Roy of Scarborough; along with his eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Susan Ouellette of Fort Kent and Pat Thomas of New Hampshire. Viewing hours will be from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, June 1, at the Hobbs Funeral Home at 671 Rt 1 in Scarborough. The service will be held at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in Portland on Tuesday, June 2, at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland. CHESTERVILLE – Donald W. Tucker went home to be with his Lord, surrounded by his family and loved ones, on Friday, Nov. 13, at the age of 89.
He was born Sept. 27, 1920, in North Salem, N.Y., the son of Erie and Nina Tucker. He shared his childhood with his brothers, George and Robert, and his sister, Nina. He graduated from Ridgefield Preparatory School in Connecticut, where his father was the headmaster. He attended the City College of New York and lived in Virginia for a short time.
He was a proud veteran of World War II, where he served his country in the Pacific. Prior to serving his country, he met and married his lifelong love and companion, Nancy Andrews Tucker, in Waltham, Mass., in 1943. Shortly after being married, they moved to Indianapolis, where Donald attended Lincoln Chiropractic College. He graduated in 1950 and he and Nancy moved to Ellsworth, where he set up practice in 1951.
While raising their five children in Ellsworth, they were active in the local grange and both enjoyed serving their community through various organizations. In 1966 they moved their family to Farmington, where Donald set up a new practice. Over the years Donald and Nancy welcomed many college students and missionaries into their home, where they were provided a warm and safe haven. Don and Nancy became active in the Republican Party, where they passionately fought for the right to life movement.
Donald served as president of the Maine State Chiropractic Association in 1973. He was instrumental in lobbying for chiropractic care for the people of Maine when the profession came under attack in the 1970s. Donald and Nancy were members of Farmington Baptist Church and gave so much of themselves to sharing the love of God with others. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered for his love of all people, his sense of humor, and his undying commitment to his friends, family, and to his Lord.
He is survived by his five children, Martha Beathem and her husband, Steve, of Ellsworth, Stephen Tucker and his wife, Anne, of Charlestown, Mass., Peter Tucker and his wife, Bonnie, of Augusta, Douglas Tucker and his wife, Anita, of Wilton, and Beth Childs and her husband, Lindy, of Chesterville; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

ROME — David William Hoyt, 84, died Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Augusta.
He was born in Pittsfield, Mass., on March 30, 1925, the son of Frederick and Ruth (Carpenter) Hoyt. David attended schools, and graduated high school in Pittsfield. On March 17, 1943, David joined the Navy, serving as pharmacist mate during World War II.
He graduated from the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago in 1950. David began his chiropractic career in Humboldt, Iowa, in 1951, moving to Maine and working part time in Winthrop until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of the American Chiropractic Association, the Iowa Chiropractic Association and the Maine Chiropractic Association.
David was a member of the Union Church UMC in Belgrade Lakes. He was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge of Masons in Humboldt, Iowa. He enjoyed playing his guitar and studying history, and was an excellent dancer. In Iowa, he directed plays at the community theater.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 35 years, Mavis (Wells) Hoyt. Surviving are three sons, Michael and Timothy Hoyt, of the Greater Pheonix, Ariz., area, and Jeffery Hoyt and his wife, Mildred, of southern California; grandchildren Sarah Hoyt, of Albuquerque, N.M., Angelique Hoyt, of southern California, Andrew Hoyt, of the Greater Phoenix area, and Johnathan Hoyt and his wife, Jamie Hoyt, of southern California; great-grandchildren Johnathan Hoyt and Jadynmarie Hoyt, of southern California; stepchildren Virginia Comeford and her husband, Timothy, of Rome, Candace Richter and her husband, Daniel, of Cape Cod, Mass., and Steven Schulz, of Belgrade; stepgrandchildren Christopher Richter and his wife, Jennifer, and Nichole Richter, all of Colorado; and stepgreat-granddaughter Parker Camille Richter, of Colorado.
